In the Hindu Dharma religion of Bali, animism and ancestor worship plays an important role. The Balinese phrase "sekala niksala" (visible-unvisible) symbolises the idea that the fysical world is pervaded by the spiritual world. Almost everything has a soul and to protect yourself against the evil you should accomplish certain rituals and ceremonies. There’s a communal consciousness offerings are essential to keep the cosmos and your own life in balance. That’s what the ancestors did, and their ancestors too, hence so it must be. The very, very many temples on Bali are crucial in this context. The children in these images follow the rituals of their parents during temple ceremonies. They represent a new generation, which is getting familiar with this world of spirits. One day they will be the ancestors, who will be worshipped.
